Jodhpur Travel Guide: Best Places & Things to Do

The first glimpse of Jodhpur feels almost unreal, like someone dipped an entire city into a pot of indigo. Known as the Blue City, its maze of cobalt houses glows beneath the towering walls of Mehrangarh Fort, creating one of the most striking landscapes in Rajasthan. Wander through its narrow lanes and you will find a city that effortlessly blends royal history, vibrant markets, fragrant street food, and warm desert hospitality. From centuries old stepwells and bustling bazaars to rooftop cafés overlooking a sea of blue, Jodhpur isn’t just a destination you visit. It is a place you slowly soak in, one sunlit alley and breathtaking view at a time. ✨

Things to know before you travel to Jodhpur

How to reach Jodhpur?

Reaching Jodhpur is fairly convenient as the Blue City is well connected by air, rail, and road to major metropolitan cities in India. The city’s Jodhpur Airport has regular flights from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur, making air travel the fastest option. If you prefer trains, Jodhpur Junction railway station is a major railhead with frequent connections to cities such as Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. For road travellers, well maintained highways make it easy to drive or take buses from nearby destinations like Udaipur and Jaipur, offering a scenic journey through Rajasthan’s desert landscapes.

Where to stay?

Accommodation in Jodhpur caters to every kind of traveller, from luxury seekers to backpackers. For a royal experience, heritage properties like Umaid Bhawan Palace and RAAS Jodhpur offer stunning views and regal hospitality. Mid-range travellers can choose comfortable boutique stays and heritage havelis such as Pal Haveli, which blend traditional charm with modern amenities. Budget travellers and backpackers will also find plenty of hostels and guesthouses around the old city near Mehrangarh Fort, offering affordable stays along with beautiful rooftop views of the famous blue houses.

How to commute within city?

While Uber, Ola, and Rapido operate across Jodhpur, I would recommend exploring the old city by auto-rickshaw. The narrow, winding lanes are often too tight for cars, making autos a far more convenient and efficient way to get around.

Pro tip: Always bargain when taking an auto. Auto drivers often quote higher fares to tourists, so it’s best not to accept the first price and negotiate a little before starting your ride.
